Men’s Bespoke Suits in Bangkok
A practical guide to fabrics, fits and construction — so you can choose a made-to-measure suit with confidence at our Pratunam workshop.
Made-to-measure for the modern gentleman
At Robin Tailors we craft men’s bespoke and made-to-measure suits for business, formal occasions and everyday professional wear. Every garment is cut to your measurements, so fit and comfort come first. Understanding a few fundamentals of cloth, cut and construction helps you get more from your consultation — whether you are dressing for Bangkok’s climate, a wedding or the boardroom.
Suit fabrics: wool, linen, cotton and blends
Cloth choice drives how a suit looks, feels and performs through the day. In our showroom you can compare hand-feel, drape and seasonality before we cut.
Wool and Super numbers
Worsted wool remains the classic choice for business suits. Mill labels such as Super 100s, 120s or 150s describe yarn fineness: higher numbers feel finer and lighter, but very high Supers can crease more easily and may suit dressier or cooler settings. Mid-range Super wools often balance durability, breathability and a polished finish for daily wear.
Linen
Linen is light and highly breathable — well suited to warm weather and outdoor events. It creases characteristically; many clients accept that as part of its relaxed look. Pure linen and linen blends both appear in summer wardrobes.
Cotton and blends
Cotton suits and jackets offer a softer, more casual hand. Wool–silk, wool–linen and other blends combine drape, sheen or coolness depending on the mix. Your tailor can advise which cloth suits travel, air-conditioned offices or evening events.
Seasonal weights
Cloth weight (often discussed in ounces or grams per metre) affects warmth and structure. Lighter weights favour tropical and summer use; mid-weights cover most year-round business needs; heavier cloths suit cooler climates and structured winter coats. In Bangkok, many clients prefer lighter to mid-weight options for comfort between outdoor heat and indoor air conditioning.
Fits and silhouettes
Made-to-measure starts with a silhouette that flatters your build and matches how you dress.
Slim fit
A closer cut through the chest, waist and thigh, with a shorter jacket length on many modern patterns. Ideal if you prefer a sharp, contemporary outline — provided the cloth and construction still allow comfortable movement.
Classic fit
More room through the body and sleeves, with traditional proportions. A reliable choice for conservative business dress and for clients who prioritise ease over a very tapered look.
Modern / contemporary fit
Sits between slim and classic: clean lines without extreme tapering. Often the most versatile option for mixed wardrobes — office by day, dinner or travel by evening.
Jacket construction: canvassed and fused
Inside the chest, construction shapes how a jacket rolls, breathes and ages.
Canvassed construction
A layer of canvas (often wool or a blend) is pad-stitched between cloth and lining. Over time the canvas moulds subtly to you, supporting a soft roll through the lapel and a natural drape. Full and half-canvas approaches are both used in quality tailoring.
Fused construction
Fusible interlining is bonded to the cloth for structure. Modern fusing can be light and durable when well executed; it is common in many ready-to-wear and some made-to-measure programmes. Discuss with your tailor which approach suits your cloth and budget.
Lapels, buttons, vents and trousers
Small design choices change formality and proportion.
Lapels: notch, peak and shawl
Notch lapels are the everyday business standard — versatile on single-breasted jackets. Peak lapels read more formal and are classic on double-breasted coats and some dinner jackets. Shawl lapels are traditional on tuxedos and evening wear, with a continuous curved edge.
Buttons and vents
Two-button single-breasted jackets are the modern default; three-button and double-breasted layouts remain available for classic or fashion-forward looks. Rear vents — single (centre) or double (side) — affect how the jacket sits when you walk or sit; side vents often suit more active wear.
Trousers: break and pleats
The break is how much cloth rests on the shoe: full, medium or no break. A slight break is a common balanced choice. Flat-front trousers look clean and contemporary; pleats add ease through the hip and a more traditional line. Rise and hem finish should match the shoes you wear most often.
Shirts and collars
A made-to-measure shirt completes the suit. Collar style should suit your face shape and how often you wear a tie: point and semi-spread collars work widely for business; cutaway collars favour wider ties and open-collar looks; button-downs lean casual. Cuff choices (barrel or double/French) and precise neck, chest and sleeve measurements prevent gaping and pulling — issues that off-the-rack shirts often show.
Choosing for business, weddings and Bangkok climate
Business: Navy and mid-grey mid-weight wools in a modern or classic fit remain the most versatile. Keep details restrained for conservative workplaces; add subtle texture (birdseye, micro-check) when dress codes allow.
Weddings and formal events: Darker tones, peak lapels or a dinner jacket may be appropriate depending on the invitation. Morning dress and tuxedo conventions vary by culture — bring photos or a dress-code note to your consultation.
Bangkok climate: Favour breathable mid-to-light cloths, unlined or lightly lined jackets where suitable, and fabrics that recover between outdoor heat and cool interiors. Linen and tropical wool are frequent warm-weather choices.
Care tips and the fitting process
Care tips
Brush suits after wear and hang them on shaped hangers to air before returning to the wardrobe. Dry-clean sparingly — over-cleaning can stress cloth and structure. Steam lightly to refresh; store with cedar or similar moth deterrents in humid climates. Rotate suits so each piece can rest between wears.
How fittings work at Robin Tailors
Consultation covers style and fabric, then we take a full set of measurements. After construction you attend a fitting so we can refine balance, sleeve length, trouser break and overall comfort. Final alterations precede delivery to your hotel or home in Bangkok, with worldwide delivery available for reorders. Visiting from abroad? Allow time in your itinerary for measuring and at least one fitting.
